Golgo Plateau

The Golgo Plateau , is probably the most interesting historical archaeological context of the Baunese territory, protected by Nuraghi guarding all natural access, and the main field of conveying and conserving rainwater of the karst plateau.
A place full of sounds and sensations of mysterious presences , the Plateau is known mainly for the Voragine (which with its 280 m. is the deepest in Europe ) identified as the place where the killing of the elderly was carried out between laughter rituals, (this is where the term sardonic rice comes from) and a frenzy also of the macabre incursion of the Mamuthones.

As Piscinas

Near the Voragine we find As Piscinas , natural basins for collecting rainwater, modified by man to the form we know today, to allow both the processing of metals, and magic cults, animistic-naturalistic, like the “Divine Judgment” of the water’s ordeal.

Co’e Serra

Co’e Serra , in the Golgo Plateau is probably the best known among the nuraghi of Baunei . Built in the second half of the seventeenth century in late Gothic style, here is the church dedicated to St. Pietro (legend has it that S. Pietro freed the population of Golgo from “Su Scultone”, a monster that lived in the Voragine, and whose anger was only calmed by the sacrifice of young virgins). Just in front of the fence of the Church is the anthropomorphic betile which bears no resemblance to any other in Sardinia, while it presents vague similarities with the sculptures dedicated to Shardana.

How to get there : from Baunei, on the SS 125 road, after the Church of San Nicola turn right in the north direction and follow the signs for “San Pietro – Golgo”.
After going through a series of tight, uphill bends from the town of Baunei, a wild valley of basaltic origin will open up to visitors, surrounded by a series of limestone bastions, and covered by dense oak, juniper and Mediterranean scrub vegetation.
